Band: Drink To Victory

-Punk is a much maligned music movement. What started out as a hostile political and minimalist artistic statement inspired countless drunken "I can play that shit!" imitators. This situation reminds of Jackson Pollock's work: everyone who doesn't understand it claims that they could do it just as well. Punk differs from Pollock in that albums of 3 chord anthems can be created effortlessly by amateurs. DIIV makes this kind of music worth listening to again because they effectively treat different subgenres of punk as elements of a single composition. The tracks transition between pop, shorter and more intricate "hardcore," and emotionally intense and vocally focused. The instrumentals are tight; the vocals are varied and interesting. I'm forced to admit that the live show is significantly more enjoyable than the album, and that the genre transitions I spoke of are easier to detect at shows.
