Band: Handbrake

Handbrake is not a band that allows you to tune in and out of their specific attacks. Just as you begin to unfurl for a tasty, albeit dissonant hook, their namesake kicks in and a new musical phrase is telling you how it is, and how its gonna be. Their 2008 EP “Brillo’s Aftermath” could almost be accused of not taking itself seriously, especially with enigmatic lyrics like “I don’t remember minding my own business…” But who fu__ing cares” The fact of the matter is that this is a great collection of songs. It’s not only delivered from American punk and hardcore, but also represents the brilliance and strangeness of Denton’s own music scene, calling to mind Great bands like Birth to Burial, Raised by Tigers and Tank Tank (one of the guitarist and the drummers previous band.) To single out anyone or two songs on “Brillo’s Aftermath” is to negate the spirit of the EP’s whole. Fans of sonic Youth, Sub Pop era Nirvana, and Fugazi will enjoy this record immensely, as will anyone with a musically free spirit.
